Boarding-school application checklist: a 12-month timeline
Steps
- 12 months before (around September): make a long list of schools (use filters for region, grades, F-1/I-20) and check each school's deadlines and tests.
- 11–10 months: register for the tests the schools require (for example an admission test and an English test); start school visits or virtual tours.
- 10–9 months: request transcripts and ask teachers for recommendations (use our templates).
- 9–8 months: write essays; schedule interviews; ask schools about international student fees, ESL support and guardian rules.
- 8–7 months (around January–February): submit applications by each school's deadline; confirm transcripts, recommendations and test scores arrived.
- 6–5 months (around March): read decisions and financial aid letters; compare total costs.
- 5 months (around April): accept one offer and pay the deposit; send financial documents (bank letter, support statement) for the I-20.
- 4 months: receive and sign the I-20 (or DS-2019 for J-1); pay the SEVIS fee.
- 4–3 months: complete the DS-160, pay the visa fee, book and attend the visa interview.
- 2 months: arrange a U.S. guardian, health forms and insurance the school requires; book flights (arrival no earlier than 30 days before the I-20 start date).
- Arrival: carry the I-20/DS-2019 in hand luggage, check the I-94 online, and report to the school.
How to use this checklist
The months count back from a typical late-August/September start. Deadlines differ from school to school, and some schools admit students on a rolling basis — always follow each school's own dates.
The visa steps at the end follow the official order: I-20 or DS-2019 → SEVIS I-901 fee → DS-160 → visa interview → travel and I-94. Each step has its own page in this library with official links and the date we checked them.
This is a USAnaru™ original checklist.
Common mistakes
- Starting too late for tests and recommendations.
- Applying only to schools that cannot issue an I-20 (not SEVP-certified).
- Choosing a public high school for a multi-year F-1 plan (12-month limit).
- Booking a flight that lands more than 30 days before the start date.
Questions
When should we start?
About 12 months before the planned start, so there is time for tests, transcripts, recommendations and interviews before winter deadlines.
Can we apply after the deadline?
Some schools have rolling admission or late spaces. Ask the admission office directly.
