How to read these numbers

  • Approximate distance. We measure straight-line distance between ZIP code areas. Roads, hills and winter weather add time.
  • Some care is not counted. Stand-alone emergency departments, clinics and campus health centers are not in the hospital list, so care can be closer than shown.
  • Rural schools have plans. Schools in the countryside usually have a nurse on campus and clear rules for getting students to a doctor. Ask about them.

Questions to ask a school

  • Is there a nurse on campus, and at what hours? What happens at night and on weekends?
  • Who takes a student to a doctor, urgent care or pharmacy, and who pays for the ride?
  • Which hospital does the school use, and how are parents and the U.S. guardian told?
  • Which health insurance does the school require, and does it work at local providers?

See it for each school

Each school page now shows Health care near campus: the nearest hospitals with an emergency room, urgent care centers and pharmacies, with phone numbers. Find a school in our directory and read how far the nearest airport is. In an emergency, call 911.

Questions

Is this the driving distance to the emergency room?

It is an approximate straight-line distance from the center of the school's ZIP code area to the hospital's ZIP code area. It is not driving time, and stand-alone emergency departments and clinics are not counted, so emergency care can be closer.

Where does a boarding student go when sick?

The school health center is the first stop for everyday illness and injuries. In an emergency, staff call 911. Ask each school how students get to a doctor, urgent care or a pharmacy and who goes with them.

Do international boarding students need U.S. health insurance?

Yes. Most boarding schools require health insurance that works in the school's area, and J-1 exchange students must have insurance that meets U.S. Department of State rules. Check what the plan covers before you arrive.

Daily life at a U.S. boarding school: a typical day, dorm life and weekends

At most U.S. boarding schools, a weekday runs from breakfast and morning classes through afternoon sports or arts to dinner and a supervised evening study hall, and you live in a dorm with adult "dorm parents" on duty. Weekends mix Saturday activities, trips and free time. Schedules, rules and phone policies differ from school to school, so read each school's student handbook before you apply.
