How far is the nearest major airport? The median boarding school is 63 km (39 miles) away
A boarding school's address matters on travel days. We measured the straight-line distance from each school to the nearest major airport for the 232 boarding schools in the USAnaru™ directory that have the data.
| How far | Share of schools |
|---|---|
| Within 50 km (31 miles) | 38% |
| Within 100 km (62 miles) | 74% |
| Within 150 km (93 miles) | 87% |
- The median is 63 km (39 miles); the closest quarter is within 33 km (21 miles) and the farthest quarter is 104 km (65 miles) or more.
What the distance does not tell you
- Driving time. Add traffic and weather; mountain and winter roads can double a trip.
- Which airport. The nearest is not always the cheapest or the one with direct flights from your country. Check flight options before you decide.
- Who pays and who escorts. Ask whether the school meets new international students at the airport, on which dates and at what cost, and what the airline rules are for a student traveling alone.
Plan your breaks too
Many dorms close during long breaks. Plan the trip home or where to stay during boarding school breaks, and read how a U.S. guardian works if your child is under 18 and your family is abroad.

Questions
Is this the driving distance?
No. It is the straight-line distance from the school to the nearest major airport. Roads, traffic and weather add time, so a school 60 km away can take over an hour by car.
Do boarding schools arrange airport pickups?
Many do for new international students at set arrival times, sometimes for a fee. Ask for the dates, the airports they serve and whether a younger student can be escorted.
