Boarding school tuition in numbers: the median is $76,990 among 134 schools
Among 134 boarding schools whose own websites publish boarding tuition (mostly 2026–27), the median is $76,990 a year and the middle half runs from $67,000 to $80,800. The highest is $116,941. Day tuition at 121 schools has a median of $47,500. Tuition is not the full cost, and published prices are before financial aid.

We collected tuition from each school's own website, with the school year shown on every USAnaru™ school page. For 134 boarding schools the published boarding tuition is mostly for 2026–27 (a few are 2025–26 or 2027–28). As of 2026-10-12:

Boarding tuition (per year) Amount
Lowest $18,500
Lower quarter $67,000
Median $76,990
Upper quarter $80,800
Highest $116,941

For 121 schools that also publish day tuition, the median is $47,500 (lower quarter $34,500, upper quarter $57,610). The medians come from different sets of schools, so they are a guide, not an exact boarding premium.

How to use this

  • Expect a wide range. The middle half sits within about $14,000, but the lowest and highest differ by over $98,000. A very low figure may be a school with few boarders or a different fee structure, so read its page.
  • Add the extras. Tuition leaves out flights, insurance, fees, books and spending money. Use our budgeting guide.
  • Ask about aid. Published prices are before aid. Ask whether international students can receive need-based aid.

Limits of these numbers

Only schools that publish a price are counted, so very small or private-pricing schools are missing. Prices change every year. Check the school's own page and how we label data before you plan. Compare schools in our directory.

Questions

Is tuition the full cost of boarding school?

No. Add travel, health insurance, books, fees, spending money and in many cases an international-student fee. See our budgeting guide for the list.

Do these prices include financial aid?

No. They are the published sticker prices. Many schools offer need-based aid, though some give little or none to international students, so ask each school.

What does a U.S. boarding school really cost? A budget checklist beyond tuition

Tuition and boarding are the largest cost, but not the only one. Plan also for application and test fees, the I-901 SEVIS fee ($350 for F-1) and the visa application fee ($185), health insurance, flights, supplies and spending money, and a guardian service if the school requires one. Ask every school for a full written cost sheet and for its financial aid rules for international students before you compare prices.
