How big is a U.S. boarding school? Median 266 students and about 7 students per teacher
We looked at the 232 boarding schools in the USAnaru™ directory that have NCES Private School Universe Survey (PSS 2023-24) figures. These are school-reported numbers.
| Measure | Lower quarter | Median | Upper quarter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Students enrolled | 143 | 266 | 446 |
| Students per full-time-equivalent teacher | 5.7 | 7.2 | 8.9 |
- 38% of these schools enroll fewer than 200 students; 67% enroll fewer than 400. The largest has 2,203.
- 67% have a student–teacher ratio of 8 to 1 or lower, and 82% have 10 to 1 or lower.
How to read the numbers
- Ratio is not class size. It divides all students by all teaching staff in full-time equivalents. Ask the school for its typical class size and how many students share an advisor.
- Size shapes choice. A school with 150 students may offer a handful of sports and a limited course list; one with 600 offers more of both. Look at the school's own course and activity pages from the school list.
- Compare like with like. Day students are counted in enrollment at many schools, so a school's boarding community can be smaller than the total.

Questions
Is the student–teacher ratio the same as class size?
No. It is the number of students per full-time-equivalent teacher, so it counts teachers who are not in a classroom at a given moment. Class size is usually a bit larger. Ask each school for its average class size.
Is a smaller boarding school better?
Not automatically. A small school can mean more attention and a tight community, but fewer courses, sports teams and friends to choose from. Decide what matters for your child.
