Travel day checklist: what to carry to the U.S. port of entry
Steps
- Passport valid for travel, with the F-1 or J-1 visa inside.
- Signed original Form I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) — in your hand luggage, not in checked bags.
- Proof of funds: the bank letter and support statement you gave the school or sponsor.
- SEVIS I-901 fee receipt and the school's admission or sponsor's placement letter.
- Contacts: the school's DSO or sponsor, and your U.S. guardian or host family.
- Flight that lands no more than 30 days before the program start date on your I-20 or DS-2019.
- After arrival: download your I-94 online and check it.
Why these documents
Federal rules admit an F-1 student who presents an I-20 from an SEVP-certified school and documentary evidence of financial support in the amount on the I-20. J-1 visitors present the DS-2019 from their sponsor. Study in the States reminds students to keep the signed I-20 with them, because the CBP officer will ask for it, and that F-1 students may arrive up to 30 days before the start date. J-1 rules allow the same 30 days.
This is a USAnaru™ original checklist built from those official rules.
Common mistakes
- Packing the I-20 or DS-2019 in checked luggage.
- Arriving more than 30 days before the start date.
- No proof of funds with you — F-1 admission rules ask for documentary evidence of financial support.
Questions
